In the United States, car carriers typically transport between 2 and 9 cars at a time. However, car trailers can be larger. Nowadays, a car transporter is called a pure car transporter (PCC) or pure car and truck transporter (PCTC). In an expert interview about auto transport insurance, it was revealed that with the appearance of a floating garage, the largest of these transporters can carry up to 8,500 cars.
The difference between the two is the size and strength of the ramps and the arrangement of the covers. On a PCC, the distance between the tires can only be 5 feet, allowing a maximum number of cars to be transported. On its return trip, the ship stops in Puerto Rico to leave its remaining few hundred wagons before continuing empty to Japan, a plan designed to avoid delays and keep the ship moving. The main advantage of transporting a vehicle on a flatbed trailer is that these carriers offer the possibility of shipping the vehicle.
A clear advantage of shipping a car on an outdoor car carrier is that it's the most economical option compared to shipping a car on any other carrier. When you ship a vehicle in a closed carrier, you choose to transport it with the maximum possible protection against outdoor elements, such as tree branches, powerful UV rays, rain or hail, and small rocks that can come off the road while the car is in transit. Flatbed vehicle carriers always have only one cover and can usually only carry one or two vehicles at a time, unless they are shipping motorcycles, at which point they can usually ship 4 to 8 at a time. As both ships had limited saddles, it was common to embark on the high seas and, presumably, they were lost due to the fact that one or more of the vehicle covers came off their luggage racks and crashed into the hatch covers, flooding cargo holds and eventually sinking the ships.
